Born in Gary, Indiana, Powell began recording at an early age. His first single, “You”, peaked at No. 2 on the R&B Billboard chart. It also reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Powell released four albums before his death, including his self-titled debut, ‘Bout It’, JP, and Jesse. His most successful single, “You”, reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996. His subsequent albums received only mild critical acclaim.
Powell is survived by his family. His sisters, Trina and Tamara, and brother Jacob. He had four studio albums and almost thirteen million lifetime Spotify streams.
