The Shocking Incident: What Happened?

On May 12, 2025, rapper Tory Lanez—real name Daystar Peterson—was brutally attacked in a California prison while serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. According to an official post on his Instagram account and confirmed by USA Today, Lanez was stabbed 14 times, including wounds to his back, torso, head, and face. Both of his lungs collapsed.

Where It Happened: California Correctional Institution

The attack took place inside a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, a maximum-security facility located in the Mojave Desert, roughly 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Lanez had been serving time there since his December 2022 conviction on three felony charges.

Details on the Alleged Assailant

ABC7 confirmed the identity of the alleged attacker as 42-year-old Santino Casio, a fellow inmate serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. Casio is no stranger to violence—he has two prior convictions for in-prison assaults with deadly weapons, the latest as recently as 2018. He has since been placed in restricted housing while investigations are underway.

Despite the severity of the attack, Lanez is reportedly recovering. His father, Sonstar Peterson, provided a hopeful update during a press conference, saying the tubes draining Lanez’s lungs have been removed and he is now breathing on his own. “All that is left is healing from the wounds,” he told reporters, according to USA Today.

Medical and Emergency Response

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, staff responded immediately, activated 911, and provided emergency aid on-site before Lanez was transferred to an external medical facility. As of May 14, he remains under medical observation but is said to be stable and in good spirits.

The Motive: Still a Mystery

Authorities have not released any motive behind the violent attack. It is unclear whether Lanez was targeted due to his celebrity status, his conviction involving Megan Thee Stallion, or prison politics. The Office of the Inspector General and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are both involved in the ongoing investigation.
