Cara became an actress and singer in the early 1980s, after she was cast in the film Fame. In the movie, she played a young dancer named Coco Hernandez. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for her performance in the film.
Cara also won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her performance in Flashdance. She co-wrote the song with Keith Forsey. She also received a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
