Rapper Kanye West is calling for change at Gap Inc., saying he wants to join the company’s board of directors. Though his collaboration with the company has been a huge success, it seems that the relationship between the two companies has soured recently. Kanye owns all of the design rights for the Yeezy line in GAP stores, and he has come under fire for displaying his products in GAP stores in a “trash bag.” Still, West has refused to apologize for being an innovator and a fashion entrepreneur.
Board members have the power to make major decisions, such as hiring top executives and approving the biggest deals, but they rarely make day-to-day decisions. Instead, board members choose people to make those decisions. This means Kanye West may have a chance to win a board seat at GAP if he gets the support of the board.
A shareholder lawsuit has been filed against Gap because the board lacks diversity. Similar lawsuits have also been filed against Facebook, Oracle, and Qualcomm. And recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law requiring companies to hire at least one underrepresented director. Even the CEO of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, gave up his board seat to a Black candidate in order to address these concerns.
