Well Known Hip Hop Manager Hovain Hylton Passes Away
Despite having been in the business for some time, Johnnathan Hylton, who was known as Hovain, passed away at his home on November 25, 2022. His family announced the news on social media “with extreme grief”, claiming he had passed away.
Hylton was known for his involvement in hip-hop and his many notable projects, including managing several hip-hop artists. He also founded Hovain Hylton Management, which specialized in brand deals. He had deals with brands such as Avion Tequila, Adidas, and Diddy’s Sean John clothing line. He also helmed projects for some of the biggest rappers in New York, including Young Guru, Young Lito, and Dave East.
Aside from the many notable projects that Hovain was involved with, he was also a professor of management at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. His course, the “The Business of Music,” offered in-depth information on publishing and business deals.
The course was so lauded that it was even named the best course in the entire college. The course, which lasted for two years, teaches students about publishing and business deals. It also provides an overview of what to look for in a manager and how to get the most out of your artist.
While the course was only offered at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, many of the lessons are still applicable today. Hylton’s death will be felt by many fans and peers. He was a dedicated artist manager, husband, father, and friend.
Rapper Troy Ave, one of the first artists Hovain help break in the industry, paid his respects via Instagram:
