Swizz Beatz and Timbaland Sue Triller for $28 Million Over Verzuz
In a recent lawsuit, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland are suing Triller for $28 million for the rights to their live music series Verzuz. The two artists are seeking to reclaim the rights to their live shows and have been claiming that Triller has failed to pay them for the shows. Triller is a TikTok-like service that allows users to create short videos. Triller’s Verzuz series featured Timbaland and Swizz Beatz live in a music battle, and the two artists are demanding that Triller pay them back for it.
In March 2020, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland launched a series of live musical battles on Instagram called Verzuz. The site allowed users to watch their favorite artists battle each other for their fans’ attention. During the quarantine period, Verzuz grew to be one of the most popular video platforms on the internet. The site’s live stream reached millions of people and broke the live streaming record. In addition, the app gained traction with Apple and Twitter.
Despite their recent success, Triller failed to pay Black creators. It promised to pay them $14 million in exchange for yearlong contracts. However, after the agreement, the company stopped paying the artists. The creators subsequently sued Triller and pushed for the company to restore their songs.
