2Pac’s Step Father Mutulu Shakur Released From Federal Prison on Medical Parole

2Pacs Step Father Mutlu Shakur Released From Federal Prison

The stepfather of the late rapper 2Pac, Mutulu Shakur, was released from a federal prison on medical parole. He was serving a 60-year sentence for a 1981 robbery that involved an armored vehicle. Several people were killed in the heist. However, the incarcerated former Black Liberation Army member is now with his family in California.

Shakur’s release comes after a lengthy fight against the U.S. Parole Commission, which has denied his release 10 times. The family and supporters have argued that authorities have treated him like a political prisoner. They claim he’s been targeted because of his activism.

The 72-year-old’s release comes as his health continues to worsen. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the incarcerated former Black Liberation activist has only a few months left to live. He has been on IV feeding tubes since May. He is now suffering from stage three bone marrow cancer.

Mutulu Shakur’s release is just one of many recent cases of aging incarcerated Black liberation leader getting out of prison. In the past few years, many older incarcerated Black Panthers have been granted parole.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has said that Mutulu has just six months to live. He is expected to spend the final days of his life in Southern California with his family.

Assata Shakur, the late rapper’s  Godmother, has also faced institutional blockades as a long-time incarcerated Black liberation activist. She was convicted of conspiracy to kill police officers and was denied parole nine times.
