The legal team for Dr. Mutulu Shakur is exploring various avenues for Mutulu’s release, including compassionate release, parole, and an immediate release. Federal Bureau of Prisons doctors have given him less than 6 months to live. While there are no guarantees, everyone should keep Mutulu in their prayers and follow the latest developments. They hope that he will soon be able to return home to his family. In the meantime, his legal team will continue to monitor his medical records.

While in prison, Dr. Shakur is battling Stage 3 bone myeloma, a rare blood cancer. He has received a stem cell transplant but relapsed, requiring dangerous chemotherapy. The chemotherapy attacks his immune system, so he will not be able to fight off cancer. Activists want Dr. Shakur’s immediate release. In January, he was denied compassionate release for a third time, but that did not stop activists from calling for his release. On February 12, they released the petition requesting his release. On May 21, U.S. District Judge Charles Haight denied his compassionate release request.

In the letter, Ben Crump and more than 200 religious leaders demanded the release of Dr. Mutulu Shakur. The group called for her immediate release. In addition to faith leaders, Blacks in Law Enforcement also signed the letter demanding her release. In addition to the letter, the group also had the support of Rev. Graylan Scott Hagler, from Plymouth United Church of Christ, and Dr. Topeka K. Sam from Ladies Hope Ministries, in New York City. In a separate letter, Karanja Kieta Carroll, the daughter of Rev. Anthony Carroll, spoke on behalf of her father, Rev. Anthony Carroll.

While the national faith group is calling for Shakur’s release, the Bureau of Prisons has not directly intervened in the case. Although the bureau of prisons has no direct influence over the sentencing court, it can recommend her release to a lower court. In the meantime, it has not done so. Shakur is expected to die soon, and a lack of federal action could result in her death sentence.

The letter to Governor Cuomo is part of a broader effort to release Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a black liberation activist who is fighting cancer in prison. The campaign calls on Governor Cuomo to grant a compassionate release to Dr. Shakur, who has advanced cancer and has extensive bone lesions. While he is no threat to the public, his incarceration has taken a toll on him.

Dr. Shakur is serving a 60-year sentence for an armored robbery in New York and Connecticut. He was also convicted for aiding and abetting Assatta Shakur in her escape from prison. During his early adulthood, Dr. Shakur became a political activist and joined the Republic of New Afrika. He later studied acupuncture and became an acupuncturist, and he helped bring holistic health care to Black communities in the Bronx. He also helped lead the Lincoln Detox Center, which used acupuncture and holistic health care to fight drug addiction and provide political education for Bronx residents.

He also was married to 2Pac‘s mother, the late Afeni Shakur and is the father of rapper Mopreme Shakur.
