Cardi B Reimagines JayâZ in “Imaginary Playerz”

Cardi B just dropped her latest single “Imaginary Playerz” on August 15, 2025, the second offering from her hotly anticipated sophomore album Am I the Drama? (out September 19)—and yes, she’s sampling JayâZ’s 1997 classic “Imaginary Players.” She even confirmed that Hov himself approved the sample, calling it a real “calm flex shit” moment for her. (<a title="Cardi B Shares Video for New Jay-Z-Sampling Song ";Imaginary Playerz";: Watch" href="https://pitchfork.com/news/cardi-b-shares-video-for-new-jay-z-sampling-song-imaginary-playerz-watch?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Pitchfork)

The production comes courtesy of DJâ¯SwanQo, OctaneThisThatGas, and Sean Island, and the music video—co-directed by Cardi B and Patientce Foster—goes full glam mode. Expect couture-level visuals, flexed confidence, and that signature Cardi attitude.
Fan &; Critic Reaction: Mixed but Loud

Most of the Bardi Gang is vibing heavy with “Imaginary Playerz”:

“Hardcore fans are loving the Bronx superstar’s more measured, midâpaced, and lyrically ambitious approach.” (HotNewHipHop)

Reddit users in r/hiphopheads are feeling the homage, noting she “floated on this”:

“I’m not a big Cardi fan overall, but she FLOATED on this. You can really hear the JayâZ influence on the flow.” (Reddit)

At the same time, it hasn’t been all love. Some fans worry it lacks innovation, calling it “just okay” or critiquing the fashion as “uninspired.” (Reddit)

Peers and the Industry: Respect and Recognition

Critics are giving Cardi props for the elevated visuals and confident wear of high fashion—she’s rocking couture looks from Schiaparelli to Gaultier, and even Marc Jacobs slid in with his own IG nod of approval. (<a title="Cardi B's Fashion Game Is On Another Level for Her New ";Imaginary Playerz"; Music Video" href="https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/art-books-music/a65790115/cardi-b-imaginary-playerz-music-video-fashion/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Harper’s BAZAAR)

Her peers haven’t been as loud yet, but given the JayâZ sample and her rising momentum, you can bet the hipâhop ecosystem is taking note—especially with Am I the Drama? dropping soon.

Why It Matters

Sampling JayâZ is no small move—it’s a statement. Cardi isn’t just riffing off a nostalgic classic; she’s staking claim in that legacy and pushing a conversation around respect and hipâhop lineage. Her campy-but-cool visuals, her unabashed flex, and the confident storytelling point to a sharp focus on artistry, persona, and reclaiming attention in a competitive game.

Whether fans vibe immediately or need a few spins, “Imaginary Playerz” sets the bar for Cardi’s next era—one where she’s not just playing the game, she’s rewriting the rules.
