Born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, DJ Kool Herc moved to the South Bronx, New York, in the early 1970s. It was there that he would make history by hosting a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue on August 11, 1973, which is widely regarded as the birth of hip-hop. Using his innovative DJing techniques, Kool Herc introduced the world to the breakbeat, a technique of extending the instrumental breaks in songs, creating a groove that would become the foundation of hip-hop music.

Kool Herc’s influence on hip-hop culture cannot be overstated. His pioneering DJing techniques and ability to energize crowds with his turntable skills laid the groundwork for the art of DJing and the emergence of rap music. He is not only celebrated for his technical prowess but also for his role in fostering a sense of community and creativity in the South Bronx during a time of social and economic challenges.

Their debut album, “Straight Outta Compton,” released in 1988, became a cultural phenomenon, sparking conversations about freedom of expression and pushing boundaries in music. The controversial track “F*** Tha Police” drew the attention of law enforcement agencies and solidified N.W.A.’s place as fearless advocates for social change through music.

Despite controversies and lineup changes, the members of N.W.A. went on to have successful solo careers, contributing to the evolution of hip-hop in various ways, including producing, acting, and entrepreneurship. Their impact on hip-hop’s evolution into a global phenomenon is immeasurable.
