Adam Yauch ,who was famously known as MCA of the pioneer hip hop group the Beastie Boys, has unfortunately passed on. Growing up with hip hop, I remember being able to distinguish his vocals on any song that he recorded on. Being in an all white male hip hop group seemed like a crazy idea at the time of their release, “Licensed to Ill”, but the Beasties pulled it off and rolled it into a successful career with a huge following. Hell, they were co signed by Run DMC!! I’m not gonna lie, MCA was my favorite Beastie Boy when I first began to listen to their music!

Just wanted to take a brief second to pay my respect. MCA is a pioneer for not only for “white rappers” but emcees and rappers in general. He was part of a group that pushed the musical boundaries of hip hop during an era that it was not as acceptable as today. Respect due. No more pain, MCA. Rest In Paradise.

“Rapper Rick Ross has been putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album God Forgives, I Don’t, and the Maybach Music Group head shared a little of his enthusiasm for the project in a recent interview. Calling the project ‘next level,’ Ross has high expectations for the album.

“This is my best project yet,” Ross declared at MMG’s press conference. “God Forgives, I Don’t is a very dark story. … It’s extremely lyrical. The music is next level — I’m expecting nothing but the biggest results. The collaborations is gonna surprise a few of you guys. … I think the stories being told on this record is going to make it stand apart from all the other albums I’ve ever done. By the time you get to track two, you gonna understand this is a completely different body of work.”

Lately, there has emerged a myriad of companies that advertise “Boost Marketing.”

What is Boost Marketing? Boost marketing, which is also known as “Short Cut Marketing,” involves enhancing the numbers of an artist’s statistics to give the appearance of increased traffic. Oftentimes the stat boosts are not real but are falsely manufactured.

Several companies advertise that they can get an artist thousands of Twitter followers or Facebook Fans, etc. They also advertise that they can increase the Youtube numbers on an artist’s music video.

Many rappers and singers believe that Boost Marketing can give them leverage or an edge in the marketplace. Additionally, many artists believe that by boosting their stats, it will attract major labels and possibly get them a recording deal.

But the major record labels want to do business with artists who have PROVEN MOVEMENTS. They not only want your MUSIC, they want your FANS as well!.

Record label executives can see right through the manufactured stats. When an artist’s music video has 500,000 views on Youtube with 12 likes and one comment, then something is not adding up.

With the emergence of “Boost Marketing,” nowadays some rappers have movements that are faker than a $3 dollar bill.

Fake Downloads On Datpiff + Fake Views On Youtube + Fake Followers On Twitter + Fake Fans On Facebook = FAKE MOVEMENT.

The fact is that Successful Independent artists promote themselves, book their own shows, sell their own CDs, and establish relationships directly with fans.

It defeats the purpose of developing a real brand by constantly paying for services that get you stat boosts on Datpiff, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc.

I can understand paying for stat boosts a few times but not constantly. Boosts can be used to position yourself, but you still need to develop REAL FANS. When artists pay for number boosts, they usually put little investment or little effort into genuine promotion to spur growth and visibility.

Furthermore, if you have inflated stat numbers but low fan engagement, for example low CD purchases or low showcase ticket sales, then that’s a failure in of itself.

Moreover, paying for stat boosts EVERY TIME you drop a new project just gives a false impression of growth when in fact your movement may be stagnant. It makes more sense to get on your grind, get a plan, get a budget and build your brand via grassroots marketing one fan at a time.

Invest in a solid Music Marketing Plan which includes Online Promo, PR/Publicity, E-Blasts, Video and Radio Promo, concert/Shows, Press Releases and Street Team/Club Promo.

Hire a good PR person with proven relationships with bloggers, websites, and print media, which will allow more national access to your movement. It’s not cheap but it pays off a lot more in the long run.

Equally important, it should be noted that Major Record Labels themselves are even known to buy back their own releases to boost sales. However, if indie artists want to survive and grow their business, then it’s best for them to develop real fans who will buy their music or pay to come see them perform. You have to make moves, document your moves and then inform the public about your movement. Utilize Press Releases and E-Blasts to inform fans. Indie artists need to stop mimicking major artists and just keep it authentic.

And always remember that the key to creating a genuine “Buzz” starts with having a GREAT PRODUCT. Without that everything else is moot. In order to create a successful genuine movement, you must treat your music career like it’s a business.

WHY PUT YOUR MIXTAPE ON DATPIFF?

Why do you have to put your FREE mixtape on Datpiff if you have a website? You’re just drawing traffic to Daftpiff and making them money.

Many independent rappers have come to the conclusion that putting their mixtape on Datpiff is the industry standard. But the fact is they are just following the crowd.

Datpiff or any other mixtape website will post your mixtape in order to draw traffic to their site with the expectation of selling ads based on that traffic, etc

Some rappers feel that by only posting their mixtapes on Datpiff they are using Datpiff’s market to build their own brand.

However, that’s not necessarily true. There are several hundred mixtapes on Datpiff that have less than 100 views. There is nothing but clutter on that site and your mixtape will more than likely get lost in the clutter.

By putting your mixtape on your own website you will be able to draw traffic there, whereby you can perhaps sell merchandise, sell ad space, sell a bonus single, etc.

I say put your mixtape on your own website first and then post it on as many other sites as possible. However, when you promote the mixtape promote it a way to drive traffic mainly to your website.
